The International Coffee Tasting 2023, an event honored by the IIAC - International Institute of Coffee Tasters, unveiled the best coffee companies, with Torrefazione Roen, winner of the prestigious Gold Medal, being particularly notable. Among several Italian brands, Torrefazione Roen emerged as the protagonist, highlighting Italian talent in the art of roasting.

This year, the International Coffee Tasting set new standards, with a record participation of 750 products from 14 countries and the analysis of more than 120,000 sensory data. The effort was carried out by more than 60 tasters over a period of more than six months, underlining the competition’s strict selectivity in the food & beverage sector.

Gold medal at the International Coffee Tasting for the Caffe Roen Extra Bar blend

Torrefazione Roen faced fierce competition, standing out thanks to its coffee of exceptional quality. Specifically, it was ’Caffe Roen Extra Bar’ that won the Gold Medal. Giving even more value to the medal obtained is the fact that less than 25% of the products won the Gold Medal, attesting to the prestige and recognition reserved for the winners.

Extra Bar, Caffè Roen’s award-winning flagship blend, was specially created for professional use, ideal for both espresso and cappuccino. This extraordinary blend produces an espresso with a smooth and creamy aroma, characterized by a strong and balanced taste.

The result of a skilfull blending of high quality natural American Arabicas and Asian Robusta, Extra Bar offers a distinctive note of dried fruit and cocoa, accompanied by a slight acidity. An experience appreciated by those seeking the classic Italian taste of espresso.

This is a blend with an excellent history. In fact, Extra Bar has earned numerous quality awards over the years.

In 2014, 2015 and 2018, it received two stars at the Superior Taste Award, a renowned competition that rigorously evaluates global food and beverage products with a focus on sensory enjoyment. In 2023, Extra Bar reinforced its excellence by winning three stars, the highest accolade, at the Superior Taste Award.

Finally, this latest accolade at the International Coffe Tasting only confirms once again the excellence and dedication that Caffe Roen puts into its products. The objectives of the International Coffee Tasting

The International Coffee Tasting 2023 aims to:

1. promote a competition between global coffees, highlighting the sensory quality of products from particularly suited regions, carefully cultivated, expertly processed, expertly selected and masterfully roasted;
2. to highlight production excellence, pointing consumers to the best products on the market;
3. to encourage producers to pursue quality in meeting modern standards of consumer appreciation.

The competition is open to roasted coffees, single origin or blended, presented in different forms for the market. The rules include the delivery of the samples in the sales package to the public, with clear indication of batch, roasting date and/or expiry date. Each company may enter a maximum of 10 samples in the competition year.

How is coffee evaluated at the International Coffee Tasting?

IIAC’s evaluation methodology was at the heart of the event, with tasters assessing products blind, ensuring an impartial evaluation. In addition to emphasizing excellence, IIAC invests significant resources in the collection and analysis of sensory data, providing companies with objective profiles for their products and supporting production and innovation processes.

The evaluation of samples took place completely anonymously at sites designated by the organizing committee, with panels comprising at least five judges of proven expertise.

The judges used the method developed by IIAC and Centro Studi Assaggiatori to evaluate the samples. The evaluations are individual and the Final Score is determined through statistical techniques and the application of the formula specified in Annex A (visit International Coffee Tasting Regulations). The judgments of the commissions are final and not subject to appeal.

What are the categories at the International Coffee Tasting?

The International Coffee Tasting 2023 competition welcomes the following categories of coffee:

A. single-origins or blends for filter brewing, Chemex, V60, Neapolitan coffee maker;
B. single-origins or blends for preparation with mocha;
C. single-origins or bean blends for preparation with automatic machines;
D. single-origins or blends packaged in single doses;
E. bean blends for espresso preparation;
F. single-origin beans for the preparation of espresso.

The possibility of making changes to the categories is reserved to the organization, which may exclude samples that are too limited in number for a specific preparation or request the producer to place its product in another category, if possible.

Specifically, Caffe Roen participated with its Caffe Extra Bar in category E ’bean blends for espresso preparation’, demonstrating the excellence of its product by winning the Gold Medal.

The success at the Gold Medal is not the only achievement for Torrefazione Roen because the awarded products will compete again in February for the Platinum Medal 2024, offering a further test and consolidating the company’s success on the international scene.
